Project description:

Moldavia has an extremely high poverty rate, particularly in the rural areas. Retired people have a difficult life as their pension is frequently so low that they are unable to make ends meet. LIFE FOR ALL supports a project to improve the quality of life of elderly people who are unable to look after themselves. This is specifically aimed at those who are alone, ill or physically disabled.

A day care centre for elderly people was built in the centre of Straseni with the assistance of LIFE FOR ALL. The care centre offers elderly people a hot meal, sanitary facilities, heated rooms and a laundry service. During the day they have access to a lounge where they can spend time in the company of people of the same age.

The "Rainbow” retirement home opened in November 2005. It is adjacent to the “Sunrise” day care centre and provides round-the-clock care for the elderly and sick.

The home was constructed in accordance with international standards and provides a complete range of services such as bed linen, food, medical care and social activities. The home can accommodate 25 pensioners. Twenty people are living in the retirement home at present.

The “Rainbow” retirement home provides a mobile care service for old people who are unable to attend the “Sunrise” day care centre. Volunteers visit the surrounding villages at regular intervals and take the elderly something to eat and assist them with their routine chores.
